“Two ears, one mouth” is a great reminder to listen more than you speak, but it doesn’t mean that you should sit quietly at an event and just observe.
It means you should ask thoughtful questions that engage the people around you and then listen to their responses. Share your stories, but don’t take over the conversation – and definitely don’t try to one-up every answer.
Here are a few of my favorite conversation starters for dinner parties and networking events:
What’s the one place you’ve travelled to that you would never visit again?
What did you used to want to be when you grew up?
Is there a food that everyone else loves that you can’t stand, but you don’t know why?
What challenge are you trying to solve right now that someone in my network might be able to help you with?
These are just a few quick, engaging questions you can throw out to get the ball rolling!
